FOM Scholarships

We typically offer a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating Senior, although this amount could be changed by the FOM Board.   The application is available in the High School Guidance department.   The winner is chosen by the High School Music Department faculty.   The winner is presented with the award on Senior Award Night.

Sarah FetherstonGarden City Friends of Music Scholarship Winner

Sarah is honored to receive the Garden City Friends of Music Scholarship. Sarah’s
love of music began at a young age when she began taking singing lessons and
started performing in community theatre. She continued in productions at
Stratford School and the Garden City Middle School. At Garden City High School,
Sarah has performed in both the plays and the musicals while continuing her
involvement in various community theatre projects. Sarah served as president of
Tri M, the music honor society. She was also president of I.T.S., the theatre honor
society. Sarah loves to sing and was in the Chamber Choir, Women’s Chorus and
was also a member of Vocal Jazz, where she served as student director her senior
year. She has sang with the All County Chorus in both the classical and vocal jazz
sections. Last year, Sarah was fortunate to sing at Carnegie Hall with The Honors
Performance Series. Sarah recently created a web series called Lockdown in which
she co wrote, directed and starred. It can currently be seen on YouTube. Sarah
won first place in the musical theatre category of the Nassau/Suffolk/Queens’s
chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). She was also a
regional finalist and competed at Nationals. Sarah loves to lend her voice
whenever needed by singing at various fund raisers such as The Turkey Trot,
Challenger Basketball games and Noodles for Neuroblastoma. She led One School,
One Book by reading to the students in the district. Sarah has been a Girl Scout
for 13 years and received her Gold Award in 2021. She was also a member of the
Varsity Swim team and the Varsity Badminton team. Sarah is so excited to
continue her performing career at Elon University this fall.

Outstanding Achievement in Band

Christina plays the Oboe and English Horn, and is a member of the Tri-M Society and a Level 6 All-State NYSSMA musician.

Alexis Grace Spera

Outstanding Achievement in Vocal Music

Alexis Grace “Lexi” Spera is a graduate of Garden City High School Class of 2018. Lexi graduated as a member of multiple different honors societies which include the Tri-M Honors Society, the International Thespian Society, National Honor Society, Italian National Honor Society. Before graduating, Lexi was a highly active member of the high school’s theater and music departments. She took Theater Arts for four years and a semester of College Scene Study and Analysis. In addition, Lexi was a member and student director of Chamber Choir as well as a member and Alto Section Leader of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Lexi was also cast in all eight mainstage productions, both plays and musicals, in her high school career, performing in the shows of Rumors, Once Upon a Mattress, Leading Ladies, Mary Poppins, Arsenic and Old Lace, Little Shop of Horrors, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Brooklyn Boy. Outside of high school, Lexi received perfect scores on her NYSSMA solos, earning her a spot in the 2016, 2017, and 2018 All-County Choruses, the 2016 and 2017 All-State Choirs, the 2017 All-Eastern Mixed Choir, and an Alternate in the 2017 All-National Mixed Choir. Aside from music and theater credits, Lexi was on the Girl’s Varsity Golf team for four years. In the fall, she will be attending Fordham University as a Theater Performance Major with a Vocal Performance Minor in hopes to pursue musical theater as a career.

Ann Ambach

Outstanding Achievement in Vocal Music

Ann Ambach has been involved in music her entire life. This year she was selected to the elite NAfME All Eastern Honors Mixed Choir and NYSSMA All State Mixed Choir. At the Garden City High School, she is in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. She is the student director of Chamber Choir and an Executive Board member of the Tri M Music Honor Society. Last summer, she attended the New York State Summer School for the Arts School of Choral Studies, a prestigious summer choral program, and will return this summer. She has taken private voice lessons for 6 years. She will be majoring in music at St. Olaf College next year, and can’t wait to further pursue her passion there.
